HISTORY TALK & NATURE WALK- MAY 18TH @ 11AM

Embark on a spring adventure on part of the historic Hurley Ranch on Kneeland Prairie, perfect for nature enthusiasts, history buffs, and animal lovers alike. Guidebook authors Jerry and Gisela Rohde will lead you through woodland areas that are both beautiful and historical.  Get up close with the sanctuary animals of Karuna Animal Rescue and savor a delicious vegan BBQ to round out the day.  On the guided walk, you will learn about:

  1. The pack trail junction, where routes from Eureka and Union (Arcata) converged.
  2. The two young Hurley brothers, ages 11 and 12, who took over running the ranch after their father was shot and killed, paid off the mortgage, added 200 acres, and built a ranch house.
  3. The Mawenok Indians, who lived along the Mad River in the vicinity of Maple Creek and came to Kneeland Prairie in the summer to hunt and gather.
  4. Flora and ethnobotany in the area
